Care services

Respite care

We take over for a week or a fortnight so the person doing the caring can stop for a while.

Most of the care in this country is done by families, unpaid, without training, and without a day off. Respite is not a luxury in that context. It is maintenance.

We come in for a set period — a week, a fortnight, a long weekend — and do what you have been doing. You go away, or you stay home and sleep. Either is a legitimate use of it.

Who this suits

  • A husband, wife, son or daughter who has not had a break in years
  • A family carer with their own operation or treatment coming up
  • Anyone who wants a holiday and has not had one since the caring started
  • Testing whether more regular support would help, without committing to it

When it is not the right answer. Respite works best booked in advance. We do take emergency respite, but the more notice you give the better the match — and the match is what makes it go smoothly.

What is included

What respite care covers

The care plan is written with you, so this is a starting point rather than a fixed list.

  • A proper handover

We sit with you first and write down how everything is actually done, not how a care plan says it should be.

  • The whole routine

Personal care, meals, medication, appointments, the dog, the bins — the real list.

  • Visiting or live-in

A few visits a day, or a carer living in for the whole period. Whichever matches what you do now.

  • Emergency respite

When a family carer is admitted to hospital themselves, we move as fast as we safely can.

  • A daily update

A short message each day if you want one, so you can actually switch off.

  • A clean handback

Written notes on how the period went, including anything that changed.

Questions

What families ask about respite care

If yours is not here, ring 0161 531 3233 and ask.

How far ahead should we book?

Four to six weeks if you can, so we can introduce the carer before you go. We do shorter notice and emergencies too.

Can the carer meet Mum before we go away?

Yes, and we would insist on it wherever there is time. A stranger arriving on day one is the thing that goes wrong.

Will you tell us if something changes?

Immediately for anything significant, and in a daily note for everything else.
